Poker; what is poker?

Poker is a very well known card game that has been played for a long time. The first confirmed poker game was back in 1829 on a steamboat. Poker has increased in popularity since the 00’s. Since then it has quickly gone from a game for small groups and recreational purposes, to likely the most played card game all over the world.

How to play Poker

One thing sure about Poker is, anyone can be good at it. Ofcourse you need to be of age to be allowed to play, but you don’t have to be a pro at other card games or anything else for that matter (being good at bluffing could come in handy though), to be good at Poker it is essential to know every card, and what every card is for.

There are 4 different symbols.
– Spades ♠
– Clubs ♣
– Diamonds ♦
– Hearts ♥
Every symbol has 14 cards. Numbers 2-10, Jack, Queen, King, and an Ace (Ace stands for number 1, or 11).

When a Poker game starts, the dealer will shuffle the cards. The player on his or her right, will cut the cards followed by the dealer dealing the appropriate amount of cards to the players, starting at the player on his or her left. Whether the cards are dealt facing upwards or downwards, depends on the variant of Poker being played. After dealing, the first betting round will begin. Between rounds the *players’ hands could change in some way, often because they’re handed new cards, or because the cards they were previously handed have been replaced.
(*the cards each player has)

At any time during a betting round, if a player bets but none of the opponents choose to call the bet, meaning they’re unable to match the bet of the first bettor, they all fold, and the hand ends immediately. The first bettor is awarded the pot. During Poker games you are allowed to bluff at all times. Because of this you are not required to show your cards when you’ve won the betting round.

At the end of the last betting round, if there’s more than one player left, a showdown occurs. This means that all the players remaining will have to reveal their previously hidden cards, and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand (depending on the poker variant being played) wins the pot.
